Circuit training is a workout routine that combines cardiovascular fitness and strength training. It was first proposed in the late 1950s as a way to develop fitness. Original routines were designed cyclical, alternating between different muscle groups (from where the name of circuit training comes). This training allows short rest intervals of 30-90 seconds between exercises, so that the benefits of cardiovascular exercise are combined with resistance training.
In circuit training can be included a variety of exercises and the equipment used can vary. You can use equipment such as rope, dumbbells, medicine ball, weights, weight equipment or equipment that use body weight. A circuit can combine at least six types of exercise to a maximum of 15 exercises, depending on the objectives or the level of your training.
Circuit exercises are generally arranged so that different muscle groups are alternatively worked to allow adequate recovery. Rest interval between exercises should be between 30-90 seconds, and the one between circuits for 1 to 3 minutes. Fitness clubs have a wide range of equipment dedicated to various muscle groups, allowing you to create more circuits. Ranging exercises and types of devices you will maintain more easily your interest and you will avoid boredom.
Circuit training consists of running multiple sets of different exercises with an average or high repetitions in a set time. Thus, according to selected exercises you can focus, as appropriate, on developing strength, speed, resistance, muscle explosion, and reaction speed and due to the large number of exercises that follow each other, you can also develop your cardio-respiratory capacity.
Circuit training plays a key role in athletes’ training. It serves as an ideal way to stay in shape, while avoiding overuse muscle groups.
Circuit training may take 30 minutes to 60 minutes, depending on your physical training. The advantage of the circuit training is that it stimulates different muscle groups and increases the heart rate resulting in strengthening muscles and intense fat burning. It is a workout that will burn over a large amount of calories (about 450-550 calories during an hour).
It is best to ask your instructor before planning a circuit training.
